Google is working on an optional recovery method that would allow Android users to unlock a device using a linked Google Account when the PIN, password, or pattern is forgotten.
Current behavior forces owners to perform a factory reset, after which all locally stored data without a prior backup is permanently lost. The new approach, labeled Unlock with Google Account, was found in the code of Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5.
According to the discovered interface strings, the option will be voluntary and turned off by default. Users must pre-authorize account-based unlock in the Device unlock section of settings.
The idea is not entirely new. Until Android 4.4, a forgotten pattern could be cleared with Google Account credentials. The capability was later removed, leaving only a factory reset protected by Factory Reset Protection.
The feature remains non-functional in the current beta build. Google has issued no official statement, and the implementation could still change or be abandoned before any public release.
