A new utility named RemoveMacAI has appeared on GitHub, giving macOS users the ability to completely disable Apple Intelligence features and delete the large AI models that remain on disk even after the functions are turned off.
Home users of macOS 27 with Apple silicon have faced a persistent issue: there is no single switch to deactivate generative AI, and downloaded models continue to occupy significant storage space. RemoveMacAI solves this by disabling Apple Intelligence, removing the models through legitimate system services, and installing a configuration profile that blocks future downloads while System Integrity Protection remains enabled.
The tool turns off Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension, smart replies and summaries, photo cleanup, and predictive code completion in Xcode. Related local models are also purged. Dictation is left untouched because it is handled by a separate system component.
According to the project documentation, all operations use Apple's own system services without direct intervention in the /System directory. The utility provides options to preview changes, view current status, and selectively preserve certain functions. The command removemacai revert restores previous settings and allows the system to download models again.
Users should note that disabling these features also affects third-party applications that rely on Apple's local models and corresponding actions within the Shortcuts app. The tool supports only macOS 27 and later; earlier versions such as macOS 26 are not compatible. The project is released under the MIT license.
