Enthusiasts have successfully modified PlayStation 5 consoles to connect to Xbox Cloud Gaming and to run individual Windows games locally. The projects are the work of homebrew developers and therefore require consoles that can execute unofficial software.
Developer RafaelNGP released PSBox Cloud Gaming, a client for Microsoft’s cloud service. Games run on remote servers while the console receives a 1080p video stream at 60 frames per second. Users can upscale the image to 4K, although the source stream remains 1080p. The application supports DualSense vibration, adaptive trigger effects, console lighting, and up to four controllers. Authentication is performed via a code entered on a phone or computer. Most of the catalog requires an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription. The client also supports streaming from a personal Xbox console through Remote Play.
A separate project named prospero-win enables local execution of Windows games on the PS5. It relies on Wine together with additional graphics compatibility components. According to the developer, Half-Life 2 runs at high settings and 60 FPS, while GTA IV achieves roughly 55 FPS in open-world sections at 1080p. Counter-Strike 1.6 and Warcraft III both exceed 60 FPS. These figures reflect the developer’s own tests and do not guarantee performance across the entire library.
Both projects remain experimental. Compatibility varies by title, and users must supply their own game copies along with a console that supports third-party applications.
