HashiCorp has published a security advisory detailing a critical vulnerability in its Vault Secrets Operator secret management product. The issue, identified as CVE-2026-8715, was disclosed on August 13, 2026, and carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 9.6, earning a Critical severity rating.
The vulnerability originates from the AppRole authentication feature introduced in version 1.3.0. Specifically, the secretIDPath field lacks proper path validation, allowing the operator to access any file within the Pod filesystem rather than restricting access to intended locations.
Under certain conditions, an authenticated Kubernetes user with permissions to create, retrieve, or manage VaultAuth, VaultConnection, and VaultStaticSecret resources can exploit the flaw. Attackers can read arbitrary files containing credentials and forward them to an endpoint under their control, resulting in secret exfiltration.
HashiCorp urges organizations to upgrade to version 1.5.0, which removes the secretIDPath field. Users must plan configuration migrations when applying the fix.
